In this weeks’ episode of Neven’s Greenway Food Trails, the new South Kerry Greenway took center stage as Neven toured the route from Cahersiveen along to Kells stopping off in the beautiful village of Glenbeigh before ending the route in our own slice of heaven – Cromane.

Whilst in Cromane, Neven visited Sharon, Micheál & Emmet of Realt na Mara Shellfish Ltd. There’s no better way to see Cromane than by boat so they set off on a tour to see the wild mussel beds.. Sharon explained to Neven that in Cromane, we dredge for mussels as Cromane & Castlemaine Harbour have one of the largest natural mussel beds in the country.

Due to the location of the mussel and oysters beds as well as the nutrients in Castlemaine Harbour, it’s one of the main reason for their smooth texture and salty flavour which are world renowned.

As most of you know, if you have spent a day or even a few hours by the sea that hunger strikes!  So Neven hopped back on his bike up the road to ourselves at Jacks Coastguard Restaurant where our head chef Jonathan Keary rustled up a mouth-watering selection of  fish dishes including Crispy Skinned Salmon as well as a Herb and Caper Crumbed Cod.

During the show, Jonathan gave some excellent tips that you can try at home such as how to get your salmon skin crispy and the best herbs to use with fish – he also cooked a delicious crab, pea and potato which can be easily prepared for family or friends.

Neven, David and the crew enjoyed both dishes off camera also – but in true Jacks Cromane style, we couldn’t let them leave without indulging in a bowl of Cromane Mussels A La Marinere with our Jacks Signature homemade brown bread and some Cromane Oysters too.

We thoroughly enjoyed our day with Neven – he’s been an icon of Head Chef Jonathan for years and everyone that spoke to him throughout the day had the same thing to say – he is a pure gent! We hope to see Neven, his crew and all of you in Cromane over the coming months and years to experience all that Cromane, the South Kerry Greenway and The Wild Atlantic Way has to offer – discover Cromane’s hospitality at it’s best.
